And for the last installment of photos from Fish This History, we have these from the archives of KnowOne. When Fish This got started, friends and family started hearing all kinds of stories about the places we fished and the amount of fish we caught. Then they saw the pictures and suddenly we were swamped with requests to tag along on some of our expeditions. A good friend of ours, Neal, you see here. Fishing with Fish This guides, KnowOne and Idaho, changed the way he looked at fishing. Soon, perhaps, it will do the same for you.

California Golden Trout

Once called the Volcano Creek Golden Trout, this California Heritage Trout was named the State Fish by the Legislature in 1947. The California Golden Trout is one of California's ten Heritage Trout, and one of two California-native species considered at high-risk of extinction.

The California Golden Trout once thrived in nearly 120 miles of stream habitat found mostly in the Golden Trout Wilderness high in the Sierra Nevada. In 1995, the fish was named a State Species of Special Concern and is classified a Sensitive Species by the Forest Service.

This State Fish is the most likely California-native species to be protected under the Endangered Species Act. It's demise is due to habitat degradation and planting of non-native trout species like the Rainbow and Brown.

Little Ways to Make a Difference

The McCloud River Redband is a beauitful little trout native to the McCloud River and some of its tributaries. Unfortunately, this rare, angler-favorite trout is in danger of becoming extinct because of habitat degradation and fragmentation, as well as hybridization with hatchery-reared rainbow trout.

Despite the best efforts of conservationists nationwide, this little fish is in need of big-time help. California Trout, Inc., The Orvis Company, and The National Fish and Wildlife Service have issued a Triple Matching Grant Challenge. What this means for you and your money...
